Spitfire Wingman From Tennessee
Spitfire Wingman From Tennessee was written by Col. James R. Haun with the intentions of having some record of his experiences so his grandchildren might know something of him and his times. He started flying in the early 30's, joining the Army Air Corps in 1939. Shipped to England before the U.S. had its own fighters there, he had an opportunity to fly the Supermarine Spitfire with a New Zeeland fighter squadron. Col. Haun, a Memphis native, flew almost every major Army Air Corps combat aircraft of WWII. Spitfire Wingman is filled with some touching and funny stories about his brushes with notables during the war, including Winston Churchill, General George Patton, and many others. He commanded a squadron of C-54's through the Berlin AirLift; led the Presidential Squadron, flying Constellations during the Truman-Eisenhower years; and continued to fly and instruct students well into his 80's. Col. Haun passed away in April of 2001. 212 pages - softcover
